A new wave of militant attacks on schools in Nigeria has left more than 80 children missing, raising serious concerns about security and the safety of students across the country.
According to local officials and human rights groups, militants attacked a primary school in northeastern Borno State between Wednesday and Thursday, abducting dozens of children from the Askira Uba and Chibok areas.
Amnesty International said the attack happened in the village of Mussa near the Sambisa Forest, an area known to be a stronghold of Boko Haram militants and the Islamic State West Africa Province group.
Officials confirmed that at least 42 children were abducted during the attack in Borno State. The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing threat posed by armed militant groups operating in northern Nigeria.
In a separate incident, armed attackers targeted two secondary schools in Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria on Friday. Amnesty International reported that at least 40 students were abducted during the attacks carried out just hours apart.
Local government official Peter Wabba stated that the exact number of abducted children in Oyo could be as high as 48. Families are still waiting for authorities to rescue the missing students.
Police in Oyo State confirmed that three suspects linked to the school attacks were arrested after being identified by members of the local community. Security forces continue to investigate whether additional suspects were involved.
Human rights organizations warned that repeated attacks on schools are forcing many children to stay away from classrooms. In some areas, families are reportedly arranging early marriages for girls due to fears of abduction and violence.
School kidnappings have become a major security issue in Nigeria over recent years, with armed groups frequently targeting educational institutions to gain attention, spread fear, and demand ransom payments.
