Nigeria Military Kills 50 Boko Haram Militants in Northeast Attacks

Nigeria Military Kills 50 Boko Haram Militants in Northeast Attacks

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Abuja, Nigeria, October 24, 2025 – Nigeria’s military has killed more than 50 Boko Haram militants in response to coordinated attacks on military bases in the country’s northeast, the army confirmed on Thursday.

According to army spokesperson Sani Uba, Boko Haram militants launched simultaneous assaults on bases in Borno and Yobe states early Thursday. The attacks came from northern Cameroon and Katarko, a village in Yobe State. Nigerian ground troops, supported by air strikes, successfully repelled the militants, the statement said.

“The combination of ground and air operations enabled the military to defeat Boko Haram militants attacking from multiple directions,” Uba said. He added that troops are still pursuing over 70 wounded militants in close coordination with air units.

This latest military operation follows a deadly Boko Haram attack last month, when militants killed at least 60 civilians in Darul Jamal, a village in northeastern Nigeria. Boko Haram, Nigeria’s homegrown jihadist group, has been fighting since 2009 to oppose Western education and enforce a strict interpretation of Islamic law or Sharia.

The decade-long conflict has spread beyond Nigeria, affecting neighboring countries such as Niger and Cameroon. According to the United Nations, Boko Haram insurgency has killed approximately 35,000 civilians and displaced over 2 million people in the region.

After the death of long-time Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in 2021, the group split into two factions. One faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), receives support from the Islamic State and is known for targeting Nigerian military positions.

In response to continued violence from Boko Haram and ISWAP, the United States recently approved a potential $346 million weapons sale to Nigeria to strengthen military security and combat insurgents.

Experts say that ongoing operations against Boko Haram are critical for restoring stability in northeastern Nigeria, where communities continue to suffer from attacks, displacement, and destruction of property.
