Two helicopters collided midair near Hammonton Municipal Airport in Hammonton, New Jersey, resulting in one fatality and critically injuring the other pilot. The incident occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m., according to local authorities.
Eyewitnesses at the scene captured harrowing footage showing one of the helicopters spinning uncontrollably as it descended rapidly toward the ground. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked diligently to extinguish flames that had engulfed one of the aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the collision involved two Enstrom helicopters — an F-28A and a 280C — with only the pilots aboard each aircraft. One pilot was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was immediately transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Residents and local business owners expressed shock over the event. The owner of a nearby café recalled that both pilots were regular patrons who frequently shared breakfast before their flights. “They were familiar faces here,” the café owner said. “We saw them take off, and then suddenly, one helicopter started spiraling down, followed quickly by the other. It was terrifying to watch.”
Another witness, a Hammonton resident, described the moments leading up to the crash. He recounted how the first helicopter flipped upside down and began spinning uncontrollably. Shortly thereafter, after a loud snapping sound, the second helicopter also lost control and began its rapid descent.
Hammonton is a small town of roughly 15,000 people located in Atlantic County in southern New Jersey, approximately 35 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The town is known for its agricultural heritage and proximity to the vast Pine Barrens, a densely forested wilderness area covering more than one million acres.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a thorough investigation into the crash. Aviation safety experts expect that investigators will first review any available communication between the two pilots and analyze cockpit video footage, if available, to understand if visibility issues or failure to “see and avoid” each other caused the collision. Midair collisions are often linked to pilots not being able to spot one another in time to take evasive action.
Weather conditions at the time of the accident were reported to be mostly cloudy but with good visibility and light winds, suggesting that weather was unlikely a major factor.
As investigations proceed, the local community is grieving the loss of one of its pilots and hoping for the recovery of the other, while authorities work to determine the exact cause of this incident.
