Fresh fighting has intensified across Myanmar as the country’s military launched major offensives in several strategic border regions, including rare earth mining areas near China and important trade corridors close to India and Thailand. The renewed military push comes only weeks after the country’s new administration officially took power.
According to reports, Myanmar’s new military chief Ye Win Oo has ordered aggressive operations aimed at regaining control over territories captured by ethnic armed groups in recent years. Analysts believe the military is focusing on border areas because they are economically and strategically important for communication, trade, mining, and transport routes.
One of the main targets of the operation is Kachin State in northern Myanmar, a region rich in rare earth minerals that are widely used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and advanced technology industries. The region shares a border with China and has become increasingly important in the global supply chain for critical minerals.
The military is also carrying out operations in Chin State near the Indian border and Karen State near Thailand. These regions contain major trade corridors and border checkpoints that are crucial for Myanmar’s economy and military movement. Fighting has reportedly intensified around towns and highways that connect border trade routes with the country’s interior.
Rebel groups have strongly resisted the new military campaign. The Kachin Independence Army warned that its fighters are prepared to defend territories under their control. Meanwhile, the Chin National Front claimed that heavy aerial bombings by the military have forced resistance fighters to retreat from some areas in western Myanmar.
The conflict in Myanmar has continued since the military coup in 2021, which removed the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, the country has witnessed widespread violence, armed resistance, economic instability, and humanitarian crises across many regions.
The latest offensives also come after former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing recently called on rebel groups to join peace talks. However, several ethnic armed organizations rejected the proposal, saying they no longer trust the military leadership after years of conflict and broken agreements.
Observers say control over rare earth resources and border trade routes could become one of the key factors shaping Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict. The situation remains tense as military operations continue across multiple fronts near the borders with China, India, and Thailand.
