Girona's Míchel Issues Warning to Livakovic Over Match Refusal

Girona's Míchel Issues Warning to Livakovic Over Match Refusal

Post by : Maya Rahman

On Thursday, Girona's coach Míchel declared that Croatia's goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic is being sidelined after he declined to participate in a recent match. Míchel criticized Livakovic for allegedly prioritizing his individual aspirations over the team's welfare.

Míchel conveyed that Livakovic openly expressed his intent to leave Girona, fixating solely on the upcoming World Cup. The coach mentioned that Livakovic refused to play because he feared it could hinder his transfer prospects. As he had already played for Fenerbahce this season, he wished to remain eligible for a move.

The coach also recounted that he had requested Livakovic to participate in a Copa del Rey match earlier this month, but the goalkeeper declined. This left the regular starter, Paulo Gazzaniga, to play despite battling flu and a fever. Míchel noted that this sequence of events has left Girona with just one functioning goalkeeper until the winter transfer period opens.

Míchel felt compelled to go public with the situation, believing fans deserved transparency. Gazzaniga, who has represented the club for three years, has had an inconsistent season and has made several critical mistakes that contributed to goals conceded, including two against Elche.

Girona currently sits in 18th place on the league table, fighting to avoid relegation, which complicates the goalkeeper dilemma as they strive to remain in the top tier.
