Michael Ma Switches Sides to Liberals, One Seat Away from Majority for Carney

Michael Ma Switches Sides to Liberals, One Seat Away from Majority for Carney

Post by : Meena Ariff

In a significant political shift, Ontario MP Michael Ma has departed from the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, responding to the sentiments of his constituents in Markham-Unionville, located in the Greater Toronto Area.

At a formal meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, which took place earlier on Thursday, Ma emphasized the need for “unity and decisive actions for Canada’s future” and commended Carney’s “steady, practical approach” to crucial national policies.

Ma’s defection closely follows that of Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont, and with his new allegiance, the Liberals are now just one seat shy of achieving a majority government. During the party's holiday gathering, Carney welcomed Ma, who received a warm standing ovation from attendees.

In response to Ma's transition, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized him for betraying his election commitments, alleging he has endorsed the very policies he campaigned against. Similarly, Conservative MP Todd Doherty pointed out that Ma had participated in the party's holiday functions just a day prior to his defection.

Ma was first elected in April, narrowly overcoming Liberal incumbent Paul Chiang in Markham-Unionville. Following d’Entremont’s exit from the Conservatives, discussions about additional defections arose, yet no other MPs have followed suit.

The House of Commons finished its fall session mere hours before Ma’s announcement. As the Liberals inched closer to a majority, the single seat held by the Green Party could prove essential in the approval of future legislation, although leader Elizabeth May has expressed skepticism about ongoing support.

Ma expressed that his choice was motivated by a commitment to “focus on solutions, not division” and looks forward to collaborating with Prime Minister Carney.
