Meta has decided to delay the debut of its upcoming mixed-reality glasses, codenamed Phoenix, now set for 2027 instead of the previously anticipated late 2026. The extra development period aims to enhance the product's overall quality.
As reported in an internal memo by Business Insider, Meta executives indicated that the extended timeline offers teams “more breathing room” for hardware improvements. The Phoenix goggles, which were initially codenamed Puffin, are expected to weigh around 100 grams but may incorporate lower-resolution screens and less computing capability compared to premium models like Apple’s Vision Pro.
This device plays a crucial role in Meta’s comprehensive mixed-reality vision, seamlessly integrating virtual and augmented experiences with real-world interactions. The Phoenix initiative operates within Reality Labs, the same division responsible for the Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses.
The postponement aligns with Meta’s strategy for significant budget cuts. Bloomberg has indicated that the company plans to reduce spending on metaverse projects by up to 30 percent, a strategy that may affect timelines across its Reality Labs offerings.
At this point, the new target date of 2027 reflects Meta’s commitment to prioritizing product excellence and stability over rushed releases as it develops its next major hardware innovation.
