Maria Corina Machado, the prominent Venezuelan opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize winner, suffered a fractured vertebra during a hazardous sea voyage from Venezuela to Norway last week. The 58-year-old politician undertook significant risks aboard a small fishing boat to be present at the esteemed ceremony in Oslo.
Reports indicate that Machado’s vessel faced fierce waves, rendering the journey extremely treacherous. Her spokeswoman, Claudia Macera, confirmed the injury while refraining from sharing further details as per Norwegian daily Aftenposten.
Despite her injury, Machado displayed incredible fortitude upon arriving in Oslo. Shortly after touching down in the city on Thursday morning, she attempted to wave to her supporters outside her hotel, clambering over a barrier despite the pain from her fractured vertebra.
Machado revealed fears for her safety throughout the journey, illustrating the perilous nature of her travel. Medical care was quickly administered at Oslo University Hospital in Ulleval, where she was evaluated by medical personnel.
However, the fracture impeded her attendance at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony on Wednesday, pushing back her involvement in the globally viewed event. Observers and supporters have lauded her resilience, emphasizing the symbolic importance of her entrance even amidst such serious injuries.
