Malaysia is expected to take a final decision on implementing a work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. The update was shared by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil following a Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya.
Officials confirmed that an initial report on flexible working arrangements has already been reviewed. However, several aspects still require refinement before the proposal is presented to the National Economic Action Council for final approval.
Careful Coordination Needed
Fahmi emphasized that due to the large number of public sector employees, proper coordination is essential before rolling out any WFH policy. The government aims to ensure smooth implementation without disrupting administrative efficiency.
He added that discussions will continue after the festive period to finalize a well-structured approach that balances flexibility and productivity.
Frontline Services To Remain Unaffected
The minister assured that essential sectors such as healthcare, education, and emergency services will not be impacted by the proposed changes. These frontline services will continue to operate normally regardless of any new work arrangements.
This clarification comes amid concerns that remote work policies could disrupt critical public services.
Rising Costs Driving Policy Review
The reconsideration of WFH policies is linked to rising global fuel and energy costs, partly influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the US-Iran situation. Remote work is seen as a way to reduce commuting expenses and energy consumption.
Several countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, have already adopted similar measures to manage economic pressures.
