A Malaysian couple is facing serious allegations in Australia after being accused of enslaving and abusing an Indonesian woman in Melbourne. The case, currently being heard at the Victorian County Court, details months of alleged physical and psychological abuse at the couple’s residence in Point Cook in early 2022.
According to prosecutors, the woman was coerced into performing domestic work under threats and intimidation. Chee Kit Chong allegedly forced her to work to repay a supposed debt, while Angie Yeh Liaw is accused of assisting or encouraging the abuse. The court heard that she was beaten, deprived of food and sleep, and made to sleep in harsh conditions such as staircases or a garage.
Prosecutors further claimed the victim’s vulnerable immigration status was exploited, leaving her unable to escape the situation. She was allegedly subjected to repeated punishments, including being forced to stand for long hours, denied basic necessities, and physically assaulted when unable to meet demands.
The case came to light after medical staff documented her injuries, prompting a police investigation. Although the woman later died in 2024 from unrelated causes, the trial continues, with both accused pleading not guilty and contesting the allegations.
