South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi are set to hold an important bilateral summit in the South Korean city of Andong on May 19 and 20. The announcement was officially made by South Korea’s presidential office on Friday.
The upcoming summit will mark the second meeting between the two leaders this year and reflects the continued efforts of both countries to strengthen diplomatic ties and regional cooperation. Officials stated that the discussions are expected to focus on political relations, economic cooperation, regional security and broader strategic partnerships between Seoul and Tokyo.
According to the South Korean presidential office, the summit will take place in Andong, the hometown of President Lee Jae Myung. The city is widely known for its traditional Korean culture and historical importance, making it a symbolic location for the diplomatic meeting.
The two leaders last met in January when President Lee visited Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s hometown of Nara in Japan. That meeting was held under the framework of ongoing “shuttle diplomacy,” a diplomatic approach in which leaders regularly visit each other’s countries to improve communication and strengthen bilateral relations.
Relations between South Korea and Japan have experienced periods of tension in recent years over historical and political issues. However, both governments have recently shown greater willingness to improve cooperation amid rising geopolitical and economic challenges in the Asia-Pacific region.
Analysts believe the upcoming summit may also include discussions on regional security concerns, economic stability, technology partnerships and cooperation involving global supply chains. Both countries remain key allies of the United States and play significant roles in regional diplomatic and economic frameworks.
The meeting comes at a time when East Asian countries are facing increasing global uncertainties, including trade tensions, security concerns and economic challenges. Political observers say continued dialogue between Seoul and Tokyo is important for maintaining stability and cooperation in the region.
The summit in Andong is expected to further strengthen diplomatic engagement between South Korea and Japan while reinforcing the importance of regular high-level communication between the neighboring countries.
