Kyrgyzstan has moved forward with plans to attract major international investment into its water sector after high-level talks between government officials and representatives of the World Bank and the International Development Association.
Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry Erlist Akunbekov held discussions focused on improving water management and expanding irrigation infrastructure across the country.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the proposed National Irrigation Investment Program, which could bring nearly 193 million US dollars in financing to Kyrgyzstan. The project is aimed at modernizing irrigation systems, improving water resource management, and strengthening national food security.
Authorities said the investment program would help upgrade outdated irrigation infrastructure and support agricultural productivity in different regions of the country. Water management remains one of the government’s top priorities due to growing agricultural and environmental challenges.
The discussions also included plans for preparing technical and design documentation for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in the At-Bashy District of Naryn Region and the Chon Talas Canal located in the Talas Region.
Officials confirmed that grant funding worth 650 thousand US dollars would be allocated to support the preparation of the canal projects. The funding is expected to help speed up development and planning work for the future infrastructure upgrades.
At the conclusion of the negotiations, Erlist Akunbekov and representatives from the World Bank signed official protocols outlining the agreements and next steps for cooperation in the water sector.
Government officials stated that the partnership with international financial organizations reflects Kyrgyzstan’s long-term strategy to strengthen water security, modernize agriculture, and attract sustainable foreign investment into critical infrastructure projects.
