A mild earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck Kundasang in Sabah early Tuesday morning, causing light tremors in nearby areas. The quake occurred at around 3:02am, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
The earthquake was centred approximately 8 kilometres northwest of Ranau at a depth of about 10 kilometres. Authorities said the tremors were weak but could be felt by residents in surrounding locations.
Officials have confirmed that no damage to property or injuries have been reported so far. Monitoring teams have assessed the situation in both Kundasang and Ranau, and conditions remain stable.
According to Rantey Fred, the local fire and rescue department has not received any emergency reports following the tremor. Authorities continue to stay on alert as a precaution.
Residents who experienced the tremors have been encouraged to share their observations through official platforms to assist in monitoring and data collection. Authorities are using this feedback to better understand the impact of the quake.
People in the affected areas have been advised to remain calm and follow safety measures during such events, including moving to open spaces if tremors are felt and avoiding panic situations.
Emergency services have also urged the public to report any unusual developments or emergencies through official hotlines, including the national emergency number 999, as part of ongoing safety measures.
