Assam Police SIT Files Chargesheet in Zubeen Garg's Death Case

Assam Police SIT Files Chargesheet in Zubeen Garg's Death Case

Post by : Maya Rahman

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Assam Police has filed a chargesheet in a Guwahati court concerning the passing of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The 52-year-old tragically passed away on September 19 while on a yacht trip in Singapore, where he attended the North East India Festival.

Following the registration of over 60 cases statewide, the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma formed an SIT and also established a one-man commission headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court. During the extensive probe, authorities apprehended several individuals, including festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg's manager Siddharth Sharma, two members of his band, and his cousin Sandipan Garg, who is a senior officer in the Assam police.

Also taken into custody were Garg's two personal security officers after investigators discovered significant financial transactions exceeding Rs 1.1 crore in their bank accounts. Initially registered under sections addressing criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and negligence, the case was later escalated to include murder charges under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The SIT has interviewed nearly 300 witnesses and even traveled to Singapore during their investigation. Last month, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that Zubeen Garg's death was not accidental but a deliberate act of murder, emphasizing that one individual committed the act while others conspired. He assured that the forthcoming chargesheet would unveil motives that would astonish the people of Assam.

In parallel, the Singapore Police are conducting their own investigation into the incident. The case has attracted significant public scrutiny as fans and the community seek further insights into the circumstances surrounding the singer's demise.
