Kenyans Detained in South Africa for Illegal Employment at US Refugee Center

Kenyans Detained in South Africa for Illegal Employment at US Refugee Center

Post by : Meena Ariff

In a recent operation, South African officials detained seven Kenyans for working without authorization at a facility processing refugee applications for white South Africans seeking asylum in the United States.

These individuals reportedly entered South Africa on tourist visas and had previously ignored visa denials, engaging in employment that contravenes local immigration laws. Authorities are set to deport them and impose a five-year entry ban.

This raid underscores South Africa's determination to address unlawful immigration and visa breaches. The incident has also prompted preliminary diplomatic talks with the United States and Kenya.

The refugee application processing is handled by two organizations: RSC Africa, based in Kenya, and Amerikaners, a South African entity offering guidance for Afrikaners looking to resettle in the US.

Though the US has significantly cut down its refugee admissions from 125,000 to 7,500, it still prioritizes claims from the Afrikaner community, alleging persecution—claims that South Africa strongly disputes.

These arrests arise during a period of heightened tension between South Africa and the Trump administration, particularly over refugee policies and land reform issues.
