The Karnataka government has announced that all government and government-aided schools across the state will remain closed from October 8 to October 18, 2025. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to allow teachers to actively participate in the ongoing caste survey.
Originally scheduled to end on October 7, the survey has been extended due to uneven progress across different districts. Speaking to the media after a meeting with officials and ministers, CM Siddaramaiah said, "In some districts, the survey is almost complete, while in others, progress is still lagging." The extension aims to ensure full data collection statewide.
As per the government update, Koppal district has achieved a 97% completion rate, whereas Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have completed 63% and 60%, respectively. The government aims for 100% survey completion within the next 10 days.
Tragically, three staff members have lost their lives while on duty during the survey. The government has announced compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of each deceased staff member. Teachers involved in mid-term examinations will be exempted from survey duties.
The survey involves geo-tagging every household using electricity meter numbers and assigning a Unique Household ID (UHID). This will help create a comprehensive digital database of all households in Karnataka.
During the data collection process, ration card and Aadhaar details will be linked with residents’ mobile numbers. To assist households where no one is present during the survey, a helpline (8050770004) has been set up. Citizens can also participate online or register complaints through the same system.
This initiative is expected to strengthen data collection, digital governance, and household mapping in Karnataka while ensuring maximum participation from all regions.
