Kabul: An earthquake measuring 5.9 struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Friday, causing a tragic house collapse in Kabul that resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals and left a child injured, according to officials.
The National Disaster Management Authority reported the incident occurred shortly after powerful tremors shook the area, leading to significant structural damage.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed that the quake initiated at a depth of around 177 kilometers, affecting not just Afghanistan but also neighboring regions.
Eyewitness accounts detailed that the tremors were felt distinctly in areas like Islamabad in Pakistan and New Delhi in India.
Given its mountainous geography, Afghanistan is particularly susceptible to natural calamities such as earthquakes, with an average of 560 lives lost annually due to seismic events.
In November, a similar incident involving a 6.3 magnitude earthquake resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people and extensive property damage.
Rescue and assessment efforts are ongoing in the affected regions, as authorities express ongoing concerns about building safety in tremor-prone areas.
