New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant has been officially appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), the Union government announced on Thursday. He will assume office on November 24, a day after incumbent CJI Bhushan R Gavai demits charge, becoming the 53rd CJI of India. Justice Kant’s tenure is expected to last about 14 months, until his retirement on February 9, 2027. This marks the first time a jurist from Haryana will lead the nation’s apex court.
The appointment follows CJI Gavai’s recommendation of Justice Kant, currently the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, to the government. CJI Gavai described his successor as “suited and competent in all aspects to take the helm,” noting that Justice Kant’s life experience equips him to “understand the pain and sufferings of those who most need the judiciary to protect their rights.”
Born on February 10, 1962, in Petwar village, Hisar, Justice Kant is the youngest of five siblings. He completed his schooling in local village schools, graduated from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981, and earned his LL.B from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. Demonstrating lifelong academic commitment, he completed an LL.M. from Kurukshetra University in 2011, earning First Class First distinction.
Justice Kant began his legal practice at Hisar District Court in 1984 before moving to Chandigarh, where he established a prominent career before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Specialising in constitutional, service, and civil law, he represented universities, corporations, and public bodies, earning a reputation for meticulous preparation. In July 2000, at just 38, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana and was designated Senior Advocate in 2001.
In January 2004, Justice Kant was elevated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. During his tenure, he delivered landmark rulings, including recognising jail inmates’ rights to conjugal visits and ordering the sanitisation of the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters after the 2017 violence. In October 2018, he became Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, gaining recognition for administrative clarity and dedication to strengthening the district judiciary.
Justice Kant joined the Supreme Court in May 2019. Over six years, he has authored over 300 judgments across constitutional, criminal, and administrative law, serving on major benches including the Article 370 abrogation case, Section 6A Citizenship Act verdict, and the Aligarh Muslim University minority status reference. He played a key role in legal aid and institutional reform, serving two terms with the National Legal Services Authority and launching the Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025 to provide free legal assistance to soldiers and veterans.
Known for his courteous demeanour and consensus-building skills, Justice Kant assumes the CJI role at a time of rising public expectations for judicial transparency, efficiency, and reform. His tenure is expected to prioritise digitisation, procedural reforms, major constitutional bench hearings, and strengthening judicial infrastructure at the district level.
Justice Surya Kant’s appointment heralds a new chapter in India’s judiciary, blending deep legal expertise with a commitment to accessibility, reform, and social justice.
