Japan Reviews Defence Policy Amid Rising Threats

Japan Reviews Defence Policy Amid Rising Threats

Post by : Shakul

Sanae Takaichi has launched a major review of Japan’s defence and security policies as regional tensions continue to rise. The move reflects growing concerns over increasing military activity by China, North Korea, and Russia in the region.

The Japanese government has formed a 15-member expert panel that includes specialists in diplomacy, defence, and economics. This panel will examine Japan’s current security framework and suggest changes to strengthen the country’s military preparedness in the face of evolving global threats.

Prime Minister Takaichi stated that the global security environment has changed significantly. She emphasized that the stable international order that existed after the Cold War is no longer reliable, and Japan must adapt to a more uncertain and challenging world.

The review will focus on preparing Japan for modern forms of warfare, including the use of advanced technologies such as drones. The government believes that future conflicts may be long-term and complex, requiring stronger defence capabilities and better strategic planning.

In a major policy shift, Japan recently removed restrictions on exporting lethal weapons. This decision allows the country to expand its defence industry and strengthen cooperation with global partners like the United States. However, the move has also faced criticism from pacifist groups within Japan and from China.

Japan has already committed to increasing its defence spending to 2 percent of its GDP by 2027, which amounts to around 43 trillion yen. The government has reached this target earlier than expected, and the new panel will now consider whether further increases are necessary.

Experts say this review marks a significant shift in Japan’s post-war defence approach. As geopolitical tensions continue to grow, Japan is moving towards a more active and stronger military role to ensure national security and stability in the region.
