Residents living near Kramat Jati market in East Jakarta are facing a serious garbage crisis as waste piles have grown up to six meters high. The situation has caused a strong foul smell that is affecting daily life and forcing residents to keep their windows closed.
The waste problem has worsened due to disruptions in garbage management during the Idul Fitri holiday and the earlier landslide at the Bantar Gebang landfill in Bekasi. As a result, trash has not been cleared regularly, leading to large accumulations across several parts of the city.
Local residents have raised concerns about health risks, especially for children. During heavy rains, floodwaters carry rotting waste into nearby homes, causing skin infections and unhygienic conditions. Community members have repeatedly complained to authorities but say no effective action has been taken so far.
The ongoing issue highlights the need for improved waste management systems in Jakarta, particularly during emergencies. Residents are urging officials to act quickly to resolve the crisis and restore safe living conditions.
