Jair Bolsonaro Discharged from Hospital, Returns to Federal Detention

Jair Bolsonaro Discharged from Hospital, Returns to Federal Detention

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Jair Bolsonaro, the former President of Brazil, was released from DF Star Hospital in Brasilia on Thursday, just a week post successful double hernia surgery. After undergoing minor recovery evaluations, he was transported back to the federal police facility, where he is currently serving a 27-year sentence.

The surgery was authorized by Brazil's Supreme Court and was carried out without any complications. However, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over Bolsonaro's sentence, rejected his request for house arrest, demanding his immediate return to detention following his hospital stay.

Bolsonaro, who served from 2019 to 2022, has been subjected to various medical procedures since an assassination attempt during a 2018 campaign. While in custody, he is housed in a private 12-square-meter room that features basic amenities, including a bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, and a television, without any contact with other prisoners.

In December, Bolsonaro escalated political dynamics by nominating his eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, as his party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election, taking on the current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Neither Flávio Bolsonaro nor former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro has commented on his return to prison; however, Michelle conveyed her support through social media, stating, “There is a Brazil of loving people who care for you and pray for you. Together, we will overcome these dark times.”

Bolsonaro and various associates were convicted in September for attempts to undermine Brazil's democratic framework following his 2022 election defeat. The allegations include orchestrating an armed faction and inciting violence against President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice Moraes. Bolsonaro continues to deny all charges levelled against him.
