Israel has announced that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will reopen on Wednesday, allowing more humanitarian aid to enter the war-torn Gaza Strip. The decision comes after Hamas handed over additional bodies of deceased hostages to Israel, easing tensions over the recent ceasefire agreement.
According to reports from the Israeli public broadcaster Kan, the reopening of Rafah is subject to Israel’s security approval. Palestinians who had previously left Gaza during the conflict will now be allowed to return, while others can cross out of the enclave for the first time since the escalation of fighting.
The humanitarian relief effort will include around 600 trucks carrying essential supplies such as food, medical equipment, and materials needed to repair damaged infrastructure. This is a major step in providing aid to Gaza, where the conflict has caused significant destruction and shortages.
Earlier, Israel had threatened to keep the Rafah crossing closed on Tuesday, citing Hamas’ failure to fulfill its obligations under the Gaza ceasefire agreement, specifically in returning the bodies of deceased hostages it held. Later, Hamas handed over four coffins through the International Committee of the Red Cross. Israeli authorities confirmed three of the bodies were Israeli hostages, while the identity of the fourth is still being verified.
No official statements have yet been made by either Israeli or Palestinian authorities regarding the reopening of the crossing or the delivery of aid. The move, however, signals a cautious step toward easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza amid ongoing tensions in the region.
This development comes as international organizations and neighboring countries continue to monitor the situation closely, hoping for further cooperation between Israel and Hamas to ensure aid reaches those in urgent need.
