Israeli naval forces intercepted a large activist flotilla in international waters near Cyprus after dozens of boats attempted to reach Gaza and challenge Israel’s long-standing sea blockade on the Palestinian territory. The flotilla operation attracted global attention as activists from several countries joined the mission.
More than 50 boats had departed from Marmaris port in Turkey last week as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla campaign. Organizers said the mission aimed to deliver humanitarian support and draw international attention toward the humanitarian crisis in Gaza following months of conflict and destruction.
Live footage shared by activists showed passengers wearing life jackets and raising their hands as Israeli forces approached the vessels. Shortly after troops boarded several boats, livestream transmissions suddenly stopped. Reports later confirmed that at least 31 vessels were intercepted during the operation.
Israeli authorities stated that the flotilla was a political provocation and claimed the boats carried little or no humanitarian aid. Officials defended the naval blockade, saying it was necessary to prevent Hamas from receiving weapons and military supplies through sea routes.
Several countries reacted strongly after their citizens were detained aboard the flotilla. Turkey accused Israel of piracy and demanded the immediate release of activists. Spain and Indonesia also raised concerns and called for protection of their nationals involved in the mission.
The interception happened roughly 250 nautical miles from Gaza and outside Cypriot territorial waters. Cypriot officials confirmed they were not informed in advance about the Israeli operation and said no emergency distress signals were received from the area.
The incident has once again intensified international debate over Gaza’s blockade and humanitarian conditions. Organizers said the flotilla was meant to peacefully challenge restrictions on Gaza, where millions continue facing shortages of food, medicine, shelter, and essential supplies after the prolonged conflict.
