Prime Minister Micheál Martin of Ireland is set to arrive in China on Sunday, marking the first visit by an Irish leader in 14 years. This visit is significant as China seeks to engage with individual EU nations amid rising tensions with the bloc.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has announced that Martin's five-day itinerary includes meetings with President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Zhao Leji, the head of the National People's Congress. Alongside discussions in Beijing, he will also make a stop in Shanghai.
This visit is of great interest as Beijing aims to bolster its relationships with European nations, even as tensions with the EU persist. Recently, China introduced provisional tariffs of up to 42.7% on EU dairy imports like milk and cheese, following the EU's own tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and separate probes into European pork and brandy sales.
Martin’s trip follows other notable visits by European leaders; French President Emmanuel Macron and King Felipe VI of Spain also visited China in late 2025, demonstrating China's intention to maintain direct connections with essential European countries.
This diplomatic week also involves South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who is in China for a four-day visit amidst rising tensions in East Asia, particularly regarding Taiwan. Japan has cautioned of potential intervention if China acts against Taiwan, which it views as its territory. China held extensive military drills near Taiwan recently, labeling them as warnings against separatism and outside meddling.
Before his journey, the South Korean leader reaffirmed his country’s adherence to the “One China” policy in a conversation with Chinese state media, underlining the sensitive political backdrop for these discussions.
These diplomatic activities underscore a significant phase for Beijing as it maneuvers through trade tensions, security issues, and its intricate relationship with Europe.
