Iranian authorities have seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, reporting that the vessel was carrying six million litres of contraband diesel fuel. The tanker had 18 crew members on board, including sailors from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The interception highlights Iran’s continued efforts to control illegal fuel smuggling in its waters.
Officials confirmed that the vessel had disabled all its navigation systems before being boarded. Iran frequently announces the interception of ships it claims are transporting fuel illegally, reflecting the high profitability of smuggling fuel from a country where domestic fuel prices are among the lowest in the world.
The latest seizure comes just two days after the United States intercepted an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. Washington has accused such shipments of violating international sanctions, with previous incidents involving oil being transported from both Venezuela and Iran. The US Treasury had sanctioned Venezuela in 2022 over alleged links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah.
Iranian authorities dismissed claims that the latest action was politically motivated, stressing that the vessel was carrying unauthorized cargo. While retail fuel prices in Iran remain extremely low, the interception underscores the growing scrutiny over illegal fuel exports, which continue to be a lucrative enterprise for smugglers operating in the region.
This latest operation adds to the ongoing tensions surrounding maritime security in the Gulf of Oman and highlights the strategic importance of monitoring contraband shipments. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing fuel regulations and preventing illegal trade, while the international community closely observes these actions amid complex geopolitical dynamics.
