A fresh diplomatic controversy has emerged as an Iranian lawmaker publicly questioned Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the ongoing tensions between Iran and United States. The remarks come at a time when both sides are struggling to find common ground to end the prolonged conflict and reduce regional instability.
Ebrahim Rezaei, who represents Dashtestan and serves as spokesperson for Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, described Pakistan as a “good friend” but raised serious doubts about its neutrality. He stated that Pakistan is “not a suitable intermediary” and lacks the credibility required to mediate sensitive international negotiations.
Rezaei alleged that Pakistan tends to align more closely with American interests rather than maintaining a balanced position. He claimed that Islamabad has failed to openly criticise Washington in situations where commitments were not fulfilled, including issues related to Lebanon and blocked Iranian assets.
According to the Iranian lawmaker, an effective mediator must remain impartial and transparent in its approach. He argued that Pakistan’s silence on certain actions by the United States weakens its position as a neutral facilitator and raises concerns about fairness in the negotiation process.
The criticism comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving multiple countries. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has been actively engaging with regional mediators, including Pakistan and Oman, while also holding discussions with Russia to explore possible solutions to the crisis.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has reiterated that Iran can initiate direct talks if it wishes to resolve the conflict. He emphasized that any agreement must ensure that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, which remains a central issue in the dispute between the two nations.
Despite a temporary ceasefire that has reduced large-scale fighting, no final agreement has been reached. The conflict, which escalated earlier this year, has already caused significant economic and geopolitical impacts, including rising oil prices, inflation, and uncertainty in global markets.
Experts believe that mediation efforts will remain challenging unless all parties involved are seen as neutral and trustworthy. The latest remarks from Iran highlight the difficulties in finding a mutually acceptable mediator and underline the complexity of ongoing diplomatic negotiations.
