ADNOC Drilling Unveils Groundbreaking AI-Driven AD-300 Rig

ADNOC Drilling Unveils Groundbreaking AI-Driven AD-300 Rig

Post by : Badri Ariffin

ADNOC Drilling Company PJSC has successfully delivered the AD-300, marking the company's first island rig equipped with advanced AI and full automation. This innovative rig was completed nearly three months early, facilitating an earlier commencement of operations and contributing to increased revenue generation as part of the firm’s next-gen rig strategy.

Reaching a height of 50 meters—analogous to a 15-story structure—and weighing around 2,000 tonnes, the AD-300 rig integrates state-of-the-art automation, digital systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, and hybrid power functionalities. Additionally, it can connect to the electrical grid, improving both operational performance and emissions reduction.

A standout feature of the AD-300 is its automated walking capability, enabling the rig to move to different well locations seamlessly without needing to disassemble and reassemble. Further, it comes with automated pipe-handling technologies and AI-based monitoring systems that minimize personnel risk in intricate offshore settings.

Abdulla Ateya Al Messabi, CEO of ADNOC Drilling, commented on this achievement, stating, "The arrival of AD-300 signifies a transformative shift in our approach to large-scale, tech-enabled energy production. By harnessing automation, AI, and robotics, we are boosting safety, enhancing efficiency, and delivering more reliable outcomes. As the first of six rigs in this initiative, AD-300 showcases our capability to provide complex, high-value assets promptly, further accelerating revenue growth and supporting ADNOC's expansion of production capacity while fortifying the UAE’s position in advanced energy solutions."

Situated offshore on one of ADNOC’s artificial islands, the AD-300 is the first in a series of six next-gen island rigs developed under a US$1.54 billion agreement from ADNOC Offshore for 2024-2025. This initiative is set to revolutionize offshore well delivery, allowing for faster, more efficient, and reliable operations.

With the early deployment of the AD-300 and the planned rollout of the remaining rigs, ADNOC anticipates enhanced revenue prospects and sustained business growth through the latter part of 2026 and into 2027.

Tayba Abdulrahim Al Hashmi, CEO of ADNOC Offshore, emphasized, "In an era when global energy demands are on the rise, the UAE is poised to meet its customers’ needs. The deployment of AD-300 and the subsequent island rigs is vital for our growth, augmenting ADNOC's production capabilities while delivering lasting value for our stakeholders and the nation."

The rig's integrated data systems afford real-time operational insights, enabling performance optimization and supporting predictive maintenance. Currently, ADNOC Drilling is in the process of deploying AD-301, with the remainder of the rigs scheduled for delivery through 2027.

Once operational, this six-rig initiative is expected to establish one of the globe’s most sophisticated island rig fleets, further reinforcing ADNOC Drilling's role in ADNOC’s upstream expansion aspirations and long-term growth in production.

What is the AD-300?
The AD-300 is ADNOC Drilling’s first fully automated walking island rig with AI capabilities, tailored for offshore operations on artificial islands.

Why does the AD-300 matter?
The rig's early delivery highlights its role in introducing cutting-edge automation, AI monitoring, and hybrid power systems for enhanced operational safety and efficiency.

What are its dimensions?
Standing at 50 meters, about the height of a 15-story building, the AD-300 weighs in at roughly 2,000 tonnes.

What features are included?
Key characteristics feature automated mobility, pipe handling, AI monitoring, real-time data systems, predictive maintenance tech, and optional grid connectivity with hybrid power capacity.
