Indonesia has confirmed that it will continue deploying peacekeeping troops to Lebanon despite growing concerns over the safety of military personnel serving in the conflict-hit region.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry announced that 744 Indonesian Military personnel are scheduled to depart for southern Lebanon on May 22 as part of the regular rotation of troops serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, also known as UNIFIL.
The deployment comes shortly after four Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in separate explosions in southern Lebanon at the end of March. Several other personnel were also injured during attacks near UN facilities amid tensions between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang described the deaths as tragic but said Indonesia remains committed to supporting global peacekeeping missions under the United Nations mandate.
She stated that Indonesia’s participation in UNIFIL reflects the country’s constitutional commitment to maintaining international peace and stability despite the risks faced by troops on the ground.
However, the decision has raised concerns among defense and international relations experts, who questioned whether enough safety measures and emergency protections are in place following the recent deadly incidents.
Security analysts warned that the ongoing conflict in southern Lebanon continues to create dangerous conditions for peacekeeping forces stationed in the region.
Indonesia has long been one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations and has participated in several international missions over the years.
The new troop rotation is expected to proceed as scheduled while Indonesian authorities continue monitoring the security situation in Lebanon closely.
