A tragic train collision near Jakarta has left at least 14 people dead and 84 injured, marking one of the most serious railway accidents in the region in recent times. The incident took place late Monday night in Bekasi, just outside the capital, involving a commuter train and a long-distance train.
According to officials from PT KAI, the death toll has risen as rescue operations continue. Emergency teams are still working at the site, trying to free passengers trapped inside the damaged train compartments.
Rescue workers faced major challenges as parts of the train were badly crushed. Special teams were brought in to carefully cut through metal using heavy equipment. Authorities confirmed that some victims were still alive and trapped, raising hopes for more survivors to be rescued.
Initial reports suggest that the commuter train first collided with a taxi on the railway track before being struck by the oncoming long-distance train. The impact was severe, with a women-only carriage reportedly suffering the most damage during the crash.
Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said the operation requires extreme care to avoid further injuries. Families of passengers gathered at the site and nearby hospitals, anxiously waiting for updates. Emotional scenes were reported as people searched for missing relatives.
President Prabowo Subianto visited the injured at a hospital and assured a full investigation into the incident. He also announced plans to build a flyover in the area to reduce traffic congestion and prevent similar accidents in the future.
The National Transportation Safety Committee has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Railway accidents remain a concern in Indonesia, where heavy traffic and infrastructure challenges continue to pose risks to public safety.
