Indonesia has announced a reduction in its nationwide free school meals programme as part of efforts to ease growing fiscal pressure caused by rising global oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The initiative, a flagship policy of Prabowo Subianto, will now provide meals five days a week instead of six for primary and secondary school students starting March 31, 2026. However, exceptions will be made in regions with high malnutrition rates, where meals may continue on Saturdays.
Officials estimate the move will save around $2.3 billion (approximately 40 trillion rupiah), helping the government manage budget constraints. The programme, launched in early 2025, aims to tackle malnutrition and stunting and currently serves around 60 million children as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, with a long-term goal of reaching 83 million beneficiaries.
The decision comes as Indonesia faces increased financial strain due to rising global energy prices, partly driven by instability in the Middle East. As a net oil importer, the country is particularly vulnerable to price shocks, with fuel subsidies already accounting for a significant portion of the national budget.
Experts warn that the reduction could signal broader economic adjustments ahead, including potential changes to energy subsidies, as the government works to keep its fiscal deficit within legal limits.
Despite the cut, authorities say the programme remains a priority and could be adjusted again depending on economic conditions and public health needs.
