Indonesia has firmly denied claims that it agreed to pay a $1 billion fee to join the controversial “Board of Peace” initiative linked to former US President Donald Trump.
Speaking from Jakarta, President Prabowo Subianto clarified that his country has made no financial commitment to the initiative and only expressed willingness to contribute peacekeeping troops.
The “Board of Peace” was reportedly formed following diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to establish a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after prolonged conflict. The initiative proposes a coalition of nations contributing resources and personnel to maintain peace in the region.
However, reports that permanent members would need to contribute $1 billion triggered criticism globally, with analysts warning it could resemble a “pay-to-play” model similar to, but less transparent than, the United Nations system.
President Prabowo stated clearly that Indonesia’s participation was limited to humanitarian and peacekeeping efforts, including a proposal to send up to 8,000 troops if required. He emphasized that no agreement involving financial obligations had been signed.
The move has sparked debate within Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, where several groups have questioned the government’s involvement in the initiative. Critics argue that any international engagement related to Gaza must directly benefit Palestinians and align with Indonesia’s long-standing foreign policy principles.
Prabowo also signaled that Indonesia could withdraw from the initiative entirely if it fails to deliver meaningful outcomes or conflicts with national interests. Meanwhile, discussions regarding troop deployment to Gaza have reportedly been put on hold as diplomatic negotiations continue.
The development reflects Indonesia’s cautious approach to global security initiatives, balancing international cooperation with domestic political sensitivities and its traditional support for Palestinian statehood.
