Indonesia has introduced an innovative approach to conservation funding by selecting Way Kambas National Park as a pilot project for climate financing. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on government budgets and international aid while creating a more sustainable and inclusive funding model.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that traditional funding methods are no longer sufficient to support long-term conservation goals. He emphasized the need for a blended finance system that combines public funds, private investment, and contributions from international organisations to ensure stability and growth.
The new model includes mechanisms such as carbon credits, biodiversity bonds, and ecotourism expansion. Under this system, companies can offset their emissions by purchasing carbon credits generated through forest conservation and restoration efforts within the park. The revenue generated will be reinvested into maintaining the ecosystem and supporting local communities.
Way Kambas National Park is globally recognised for its rich biodiversity and serves as a critical habitat for endangered species like the Sumatran elephant, rhino, and tiger. These species are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, making conservation efforts in the region highly significant.
Officials say this pilot marks a major shift in environmental management strategy, moving towards a more collaborative and market-driven approach. If successful, the model could be expanded to other national parks, strengthening Indonesia’s role in global climate action and biodiversity protection.
