Rescue teams in Indonesia successfully saved 21 people who were found drifting on a raft after their boat sank in rough seas near Taliabu Island. The survivors, mostly fishing crew, were located about 46 kilometers from the site of the incident after spending hours at sea.
The vessel, identified as Nazila 05, had departed from North Maluku and was heading toward North Sulawesi when it encountered severe weather conditions. According to officials, strong waves damaged the front section of the boat, causing it to sink. Fortunately, all onboard managed to escape onto a smaller raft before the vessel went down.
Search and rescue operations were led by Indonesia’s national agency, Basarnas, with support from local fishermen. The operation involved multiple rescue boats and began shortly after authorities received distress information about the incident.
Initial reports suggested that 27 people were missing, but it was later confirmed that six individuals listed on the passenger manifest had not boarded the vessel. This clarification helped narrow the search and ensured that all actual passengers were accounted for and rescued safely.
Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, relies heavily on sea transport, but maritime accidents remain common due to unpredictable weather, overcrowding, and limited safety enforcement. The latest incident once again highlights the urgent need for stronger safety measures in the country’s busy waterways.
