A video showing an Indian traveller making a digital payment using India’s popular payment system Unified Payments Interface in Nepal has gone viral on social media, highlighting the growing reach of cross-border digital payments.
The clip, shared by social media user Anshuman Bhagat, demonstrates how he used Google Pay to scan a merchant QR code in Nepal and complete a purchase instantly. During the transaction, the system automatically converted Nepalese Rupees into Indian Rupees, making the payment process seamless.
In the video, the user enters an amount of NPR 2,100 while paying through a QR code supported by Fonepay. The application instantly converts the amount to around ₹1,312.50, allowing the payment to be completed directly from the user’s Indian bank account.
The traveller described the experience as “surprisingly smooth,” noting that the payment was completed instantly without any additional charges. He also mentioned that while not all QR codes support cross-border transactions yet, the one used during the purchase worked flawlessly.
The viral clip reflects the rapid global expansion of UPI. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, the system was launched in 2016 and has become the backbone of India’s digital payments ecosystem.
UPI now handles billions of transactions every month and accounts for a major share of India’s retail digital payments. According to international financial reports, it has become one of the largest real-time payment systems in the world by transaction volume.
In recent years, the technology has been expanding internationally. Countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, France and the United Arab Emirates have begun supporting UPI-based payments, allowing Indian travellers to make digital transactions abroad using their domestic banking apps.
Experts say the growing adoption of UPI internationally could significantly simplify payments for tourists and businesses while strengthening digital financial connectivity across countries.
