Bondi Beach Shooter Regains Consciousness After Mass Attack

The surviving gunman from the Bondi Beach attack in Sydney, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, has regained consciousness after being in a coma. The attack, carried out by a father-son duo, left 15 people dead and dozens injured during a Hanukkah celebration. The incident shocked not only Australia but the global community, highlighting ongoing threats of extremist-inspired violence.

Father-Son Duo Behind the Attack

Naveed Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, 50, carried out the massacre. Sajid died at the scene, while Naveed survived but was critically injured. Indian authorities confirmed that Sajid was originally from Hyderabad, Telangana, and had limited contact with his family since moving to Australia in 1998. He had visited India only six times and had no criminal record in the country.

Homemade Islamic State flags were found in a vehicle registered to the pair, raising concerns about extremist ideology. Investigations revealed that the duo traveled to the Philippines last month, a region known for IS-aligned activity, suggesting possible terrorist training.

Investigation and Background of Naveed Akram

Naveed Akram was previously investigated in 2019 for ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State cell and associations with radical cleric Wisam Haddad. Authorities have stated that his actions were inspired by extremist ideology. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as “ISIS-inspired extremist ideology leading to a terrorist attack” with devastating consequences for the Jewish community.

The father’s gun license was obtained in 2023, later than initially reported, raising questions about regulatory oversight. Police are expected to begin questioning Naveed as he recovers from his injuries.

Community Mourning and Global Reaction

The first funeral was held for Rabbi Eli Schlanger, one of the victims, near Bondi Beach. Thousands paid tribute, and an online appeal raised over A$570,000 for his family. Memorials with flowers and candles have grown around the attack site, and security has been heightened as the investigation continues. Donations for hero Ahmed Al Ahmed, who helped disarm one of the shooters, have exceeded $2.4 million.

Authorities confirm that 22 victims remain hospitalized in New South Wales. The attack has drawn international attention, with governments monitoring extremist activities and travel histories linked to terrorism.

What Happens Next

As Naveed Akram recovers, police will question him about the attack, the father-son duo’s travel to the Philippines, and potential international connections. The investigation continues into how extremist ideology shaped the tragic events, while the global Jewish community and Sydney residents grapple with the aftermath. The case is expected to influence security measures and counter-terrorism policies in Australia and beyond.
