Hougang Pedestrian Dies After Power-Assisted Bicycle Accident

Hougang Pedestrian Dies After Power-Assisted Bicycle Accident

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A tragic accident in Hougang has claimed the life of an 88-year-old female pedestrian, who passed away on September 30 after being hit by a power-assisted bicycle (PAB) the previous day.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported that emergency services received a distress call at approximately 7:55 am on September 29, near Hougang Street 51, heading towards Hougang Street 91. First responders arrived at the scene and found the elderly woman unconscious. She was immediately transported to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for urgent medical care. Despite the medical team’s efforts, she succumbed to her injuries the following day.

The male rider of the PAB, aged 49, is currently assisting the police with ongoing investigations. Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances of the accident, including whether speed, road conditions, or other factors contributed to the collision.

Local authorities have emphasized the importance of road safety for both pedestrians and PAB riders, especially in busy residential areas like Hougang. Power-assisted bicycles, which have become increasingly popular in Singapore, pose certain risks when not operated carefully, particularly around pedestrian crossings and shared pathways.

To aid the investigation, police and local community groups have appealed for witnesses. A post on the Facebook page Singapore Roads Accident also requested any eyewitnesses to provide information, receiving significant public attention and more than 40 shares. Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant details to come forward to ensure a thorough investigation and accountability.

This unfortunate incident underscores growing concerns over pedestrian safety and the responsible use of PABs in Singapore. Residents are reminded to remain vigilant while commuting, to follow traffic rules strictly, and to prioritize safety for themselves and others.
