Tegucigalpa, Honduras — The political saga involving former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández escalated on Monday as Attorney General Johel Zelaya directed authorities to act on a two-year-old arrest warrant. This decision follows Hernández's release from U.S. federal custody after receiving a pardon from former President Donald Trump.
Previously sentenced to 45 years for trafficking substantial amounts of cocaine into the U.S., Hernández's downfall has been notable for someone once deemed a significant ally in the U.S. counter-narcotics efforts.
Attorney General Zelaya stated that the arrest warrant—a 2023 decree from a Honduran Supreme Court magistrate—addresses accusations of fraud and money laundering. The order specifies execution should occur “if the accused is freed by United States authorities.” Alongside the announcement, he unveiled an image of the official arrest mandate.
This legal matter connects to the Pandora case, an extensive investigation where prosecutors allege that state funds were misappropriated by government officials and funneled through NGOs for political campaigns, including Hernández's 2013 presidential run. Many officials and politicians have faced scrutiny in this case.
Hernández's legal representatives denounced the arrest order as a politically motivated initiative. Lawyer Renato Stabile labeled it a “desperate piece of political theatre,” asserting the charges as “completely unwarranted.”
Since his release, Hernández has been relocated for his safety, according to his spouse. As the Honduran electorate gears up for presidential and congressional elections, former Tegucigalpa Mayor Nasry Asfura—backed by Trump—holds a slim lead over opposition candidate Salvador Nasralla. An Asfura win could pave the way for Hernández’s return, while Nasralla advocates for anti-corruption measures and disputes Hernández’s previous electoral win.
The Trump pardon, issued shortly before the national elections in Honduras, ignited discussions and controversies both locally and globally. Proponents argue it rectifies perceived prosecutorial injustices, while adversaries maintain it undermines accountability regarding serious corruption and drug trafficking.
As Honduras navigates its political landscape, this arrest order highlights the ongoing tension between domestic law enforcement and international political dynamics.
