Hindu Man Lynched in Bangladesh Amid Anti-India Protests

Hindu Man Lynched in Bangladesh Amid Anti-India Protests

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A shocking incident of violence was reported from Bangladesh on Thursday night when a young Hindu man was lynched by a mob and his body was later set on fire. The incident took place in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district, at a time when violent protests were spreading across the country after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a key leader of the July Uprising.

The victim has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, aged around 30. According to Bangladeshi media reports and local sources, Dipu worked at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in the Square Masterbari area. He was allegedly accused of making remarks insulting Islam during an event held at the factory to mark World Arabic Language Day.

Mob Violence and Brutal Killing

Soon after the allegations spread, tension grew rapidly inside the factory and nearby areas. An angry crowd gathered and attacked Dipu Chandra Das. He was badly beaten by the mob and reportedly died on the spot due to the assault.

After his death, the situation turned even more disturbing. Reports say the mob took his body to the Square Masterbari bus stand, tied it to a tree with a rope, shouted slogans, and continued beating the body. The crowd then set the body on fire.

Later, the mob dragged the body to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and set it on fire again. This caused panic in the area and led to a temporary halt in traffic on the busy highway.

This brutal incident has once again highlighted the issue of mob violence and the safety of minorities, as the Hindu man lynched in Bangladesh became a symbol of rising unrest in the country.

Police and Administration Response

Confirming the incident, Bhaluka Upazila Executive Officer Md Firoz Hossain said that a person was killed following allegations of insulting Islam. He added that the body of Dipu Chandra Das is currently in police custody and an investigation is underway.

Authorities have increased security in the area to prevent further violence.

Government Condemns the Killing

The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government strongly condemned the lynching. In an official statement, the government said there is no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh and promised strict action against those involved.

“At this critical moment, we urge all citizens to honour Shaheed Hadi by rejecting violence, hatred and incitement,” the statement said. The government assured that those responsible for the killing would not be spared.

Anti-India Protests Spread Across Bangladesh

The killing happened during a period of intense unrest in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a radical Islamist leader known for his strong anti-India views. His death triggered widespread protests, vandalism, and attacks in several parts of the country.

Protesters targeted major media houses, including The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, whose offices were set on fire. The already damaged house of Bangladesh’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 was also attacked.

Groups like Inqilab Moncho, formed after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have been leading street protests and spreading anti-India sentiment. Hasina, who ruled Bangladesh for 15 years, currently lives in exile in India.

Growing Concern Over Minority Safety

The incident in Mymensingh has raised serious concerns about law and order and the safety of minorities. The Hindu man lynched in Bangladesh has added to fears among minority communities as violence continues during political unrest.

As investigations continue, many are calling for justice and strict punishment for those involved, hoping such brutal acts do not repeat in the future.
