Toronto Faces Up to 10 cm of Snow This Week

Toronto Faces Up to 10 cm of Snow This Week

Post by : Meena Ariff

A special weather statement has been issued for Toronto as back-to-back weather systems are expected to bring up to 10 centimetres of snow by Wednesday.

The advisory was released on Tuesday afternoon. According to Environment Canada, an Alberta Clipper system “will bring snow across the area, which may be heavy at times.” Authorities warn that travel may become “difficult at times” with potential for “reduced visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow.”

Weather anchor Lyndsay Morrison reports that the first of the two systems arrived in the city Tuesday afternoon. This system is expected to produce about 3 centimetres of snow in Toronto, while other parts of the GTA could see 2 to 5 centimetres. The snowfall is expected to taper off by 8 p.m., giving way to lingering flurries before a second system arrives overnight, adding another 3 centimetres for Toronto.

Snowfall totals elsewhere in Ontario could be higher due to lake enhancement from gusty winds. Kitchener could see 14 cm, London 16 cm, and areas north of Toronto like Orillia and Caledon could receive up to 12 cm combined from the two systems.

The second system may bring some rain during the day Wednesday, potentially creating a slushy mix as temperatures rise slightly, before cooling again on Thursday.

The City of Toronto has said that salting will begin once snow sticks to roads, and sidewalk plowing will commence if 2 cm accumulates. Officials are urging residents to travel with “extra caution” on Wednesday, especially during morning and evening rush hours. The combination of rain and snow could create slippery roads and sidewalks.

Temperatures today are expected to hover around 0°C, but wind chill could make it feel as cold as -11°C. Wednesday’s high is forecast at 2°C, with snow giving way to rain in parts of the GTA.
