The H3N2 influenza variant is triggering a marked increase in hospital admissions across the United States, leading health authorities to recommend that Canadians stay alert as a similar influx of cases is anticipated.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 7.5 million Americans have battled the flu this season, with over 81,000 requiring hospital care. Several areas in the U.S. are experiencing record-high hospitalization rates, indicating a particularly challenging flu season ahead.
Data from the week concluding on December 20 reveals that 25.6% of all flu tests in the U.S. returned positive results—an increase from 15.7% the previous week and just 9% two weeks before. During that week, 19,053 Americans were hospitalized with flu-related conditions, and unfortunately, five children lost their lives due to influenza.
The primary strain responsible for the ongoing illness is the H3N2 subclade K, noted for its heightened severity and widespread effects.
Canadian health authorities, including Dr. Fahad Razak from St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto, caution that Canada is on the brink of an equally severe flu season. “The evidence clearly indicates we’re likely facing a challenging flu season here as well,” Dr. Razak remarked.
He referenced recent flu waves in Europe, the U.S., Australia, and Japan, noting this could be one of the most severe flu seasons in recent years. The frequent movement between Canada and the U.S., especially during the festive holiday season, fosters an environment conducive to swift flu spread.
“It’s nearly impossible to prevent transmission when flu rates are high on one side of the border,” Dr. Razak added.
Health Canada’s latest report indicates that flu-related hospitalizations have almost doubled in just one week, with infection rates climbing nearly 30%. For the week ending December 13, 27.7% of the flu tests conducted in Canada were positive, amounting to 11,646 new flu cases. Updated figures for the Christmas period will be released shortly.
Dr. Razak stressed the significance of vaccination, especially as children get ready to return to school. “If your child hasn’t been vaccinated yet, now is the best time to do it. Vaccination is our strongest shield against severe illness,” he advised.
As the number of infections rises and hospitalizations increase, experts are urging timely vaccinations and ongoing caution to mitigate the flu’s impact this season.
