New Delhi, Oct 14, 2025: Google has announced a $15 billion investment in India over the next five years, unveiling its largest-ever artificial intelligence (AI) hub and data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who discussed the plans with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The project, in partnership with the Adani Group, marks Google’s biggest AI hub outside the United States. The facility will feature gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure, aimed at boosting AI innovation and digital growth in India.
“Through this hub, we will bring industry-leading technology to Indian enterprises and users, accelerating AI adoption and driving nationwide economic growth,” Pichai said on X, shortly after signing the agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government.
PM Modi Welcomes the Investment
Prime Minister Modi described the launch as a “landmark development” for India’s digital economy. He said the investment aligns with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, ensuring AI tools reach citizens, promoting inclusive technology, and strengthening India’s position as a global tech leader.
Strategic Significance and Future Plans
The initiative comes amid growing demand for AI-driven services in India, which is projected to have over 900 million internet users by the end of the year. Google highlighted that the AI hub will create economic and societal opportunities in both India and the U.S., while pioneering advancements in AI infrastructure and services.
Google Cloud Perspective
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, called the Visakhapatnam AI hub a “landmark investment in India’s digital future,” emphasizing that it will enable businesses to innovate faster, create new jobs, and foster inclusive growth.
The formal agreement was signed at an event in Delhi attended by Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and state IT Minister Nara Lokesh. Vaishnaw stated that the facility will support India’s AI vision and help train youth in AI services.
Chief Minister Naidu highlighted that this investment represents a “new chapter” in India’s digital transformation journey, making Andhra Pradesh home to India’s first gigawatt-scale data centre and Google’s first AI hub in the country.
The announcement also reflects intensifying global competition among tech giants, as companies like Microsoft and Amazon continue to expand data centre infrastructure in India to cater to the rapidly growing digital and AI market.
