Google Instructs Visa Holders to Avoid Overseas Travel Amid Embassy Backlogs

Google Instructs Visa Holders to Avoid Overseas Travel Amid Embassy Backlogs

Post by : Saif Rahman

Alphabet’s Google has issued a caution to certain employees holding U.S. visas about international travel, due to extensive delays at U.S. embassies and consulates, as per a report from Business Insider. This warning originated from an internal memo sent by the company’s external legal counsel, BAL Immigration Law, on Thursday.

The correspondence specified that employees requiring visa stamps for re-entry into the United States might experience processing delays of up to 12 months at various embassies. It advised that international travel in such a scenario could lead to an extended absence from the U.S., potentially disrupting both professional and personal plans.

This advisory surfaces during heightened scrutiny of the H-1B visa program, frequently utilized by tech giants like Google for engaging skilled professionals from nations such as India and China. Earlier in the year, the U.S. administration elevated visa application fees and initiated stricter vetting processes, which include scrutinizing applicants’ social media activity.

Alphabet had previously warned its personnel in September to stay within the United States and limit overseas travel if holding H-1B visas. The latest notice underscores escalating concerns regarding visa processing delays that could hinder work schedules and projects, especially for workers in essential positions.

Google has yet to issue a public comment on this matter. The company’s guidance highlights the hurdles faced by tech firms in managing global talent, all while dealing with intricate and sluggish immigration systems. Employees considering travel are encouraged to weigh the potential risks carefully and to seek advice from legal or immigration professionals prior to departing the U.S.
