On Tuesday night, a major fire erupted at a construction store located near Khizarpur village in the Talwandi Chaudhrian sector of Kapurthala district, impacting the ongoing Jammu-Katra Expressway project. The inferno has resulted in damages estimated at around ₹2 crore.
Officials reported that the blaze originated within the premises, which contained valuable chemicals and building supplies. The flames swiftly spread, consuming the entire inventory and leading to substantial financial losses.
Firefighters responded promptly to the incident, working tirelessly to control the situation. Local police from the Talwandi Chaudhrian station also joined efforts to ensure the safety of the surrounding area during the crisis.
Store manager Mandeep Singh indicated that the store had been closed by 7 PM, with lights turned off. Smoke was first detected by a security guard at around 8 PM, prompting an immediate notification to emergency services. However, by the time help arrived, the fire had already spread widely.
Initial assessments propose that a short circuit may have sparked the fire, but officials are keeping other potential causes open for investigation. A comprehensive inquiry has been initiated by the police and fire services to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire.
The loss of high-value materials has significantly impacted the Jammu-Katra Expressway project timeline. Authorities are now reviewing safety measures to avert future incidents.
