The European Union Delegation to Turkmenistan has strengthened its support for media education and professional development through a series of workshops held in Ashgabat focusing on digital journalism, content production, and artificial intelligence. The training sessions took place from April 29 to May 6, 2026, at the training center of Bouygues Turkmen and brought together journalists, university teachers, students, and media professionals from across the country.
The workshops were organized with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the European Union, and the CARAVAN media project. Officials described the program as an important educational initiative aimed at improving media literacy, strengthening digital communication skills, and helping media professionals adapt to the rapidly changing information environment driven by modern technologies and artificial intelligence tools.
Opening the workshop series, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Turkmenistan, Maciej Madalinski, highlighted the importance of media development and information literacy in the European Union’s partnership with Turkmenistan and Central Asian countries. He explained that media literacy and balanced information systems remain an important part of the European Union’s regional cooperation strategy.
According to Maciej Madalinski, modern digital technologies and artificial intelligence are transforming the way information is created, distributed, and consumed around the world. He noted that social media algorithms now play a major role in determining audience reach and public engagement, while the differences between professional journalism and citizen-created content are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish. These changes, he said, create both opportunities and responsibilities for journalists and content creators.
The workshops were designed to help participants better understand these modern challenges and improve their professional skills in digital media production. Training sessions focused on practical approaches to content creation, the responsible use of artificial intelligence, media ethics, digital storytelling, and the role of technology in modern journalism. Participants were also introduced to advanced digital tools that can improve editorial efficiency and communication strategies.
The training program was led by experienced media experts from Kazakhstan, including Gulim Amirkhanova and Aiganym Amirbekova. Both trainers shared their professional experience and practical knowledge with participants through interactive sessions, discussions, and real-world media examples. Organizers stated that the workshops aimed to encourage innovation while promoting responsible journalism and critical thinking in the digital age.
This latest workshop series represented the second phase of the CARAVAN media project activities in Ashgabat. Organizers recalled that the project previously conducted another training program in the city during the autumn of 2025, which focused on media literacy and the integration of artificial intelligence into journalism and communication practices.
Participants from universities, media organizations, and educational institutions welcomed the initiative and described the workshops as highly valuable for professional growth and skill development. Many attendees emphasized that understanding digital media tools and artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important for journalists, educators, and students working in the modern communication environment.
The European Union continues to support educational, media, and digital transformation initiatives throughout Central Asia as part of its broader regional cooperation strategy. Officials believe that strengthening media literacy, encouraging responsible journalism, and supporting professional education can contribute to a more informed society and help media professionals respond effectively to the challenges of the rapidly evolving digital world.
