Emergency Airlift from Dubai Delivers WHO Supplies to Tackle Ebola in Congo

Emergency Airlift from Dubai Delivers WHO Supplies to Tackle Ebola in Congo

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In a swift response to a new strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Dubai Humanitarian has initiated an emergency airlift of essential medical supplies. This operation aligns with the directives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

A total of 20 metric tonnes of critical medical supplies were dispatched from WHO’s emergency stockpile in Dubai, departing from Al Maktoum International Airport and sent via Uganda. The supplies are aimed at bolstering healthcare efforts in eastern Congo, where authorities are combating the spread of the virus.

This shipment is anticipated to aid hundreds of patients over the coming month and will support approximately 280 healthcare facilities in the impacted regions. Included in the cargo are multipurpose tents, disinfectants, personal protective equipment (PPE), thermometers, and other essential materials for disease management.

Giuseppe Saba, the CEO and Board Member of Dubai Humanitarian, emphasized the organization’s dedication to rapidly assisting humanitarian partners during global health crises. He pointed out the importance of quick delivery of lifesaving supplies amid escalating Ebola cases and reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to back relief efforts through the Global Humanitarian Impact Fund and support from the Dubai Royal Air Wing.

Saba also addressed the increasingly complex challenges faced by humanitarian organizations, including supply chain disruptions and funding limitations. Nevertheless, Dubai Humanitarian is committed to collaborating with international partners and the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) to ensure that critical medicines and supplies reach those in urgent need.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, commended the UAE’s unwavering support for global health emergencies. She highlighted that timely responses and international cooperation are vital, especially in light of the ongoing Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

According to Dr. Balkhy, the airlift signifies the power of robust partnerships in addressing health emergencies. She mentioned that these supplies will empower frontline healthcare workers to swiftly identify, manage, and address Ebola cases while ensuring their safety while providing care.

Historically, Dubai Humanitarian has been instrumental in international health initiatives. During the West Africa Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016, the organization functioned as a global logistics hub, aiding UN agencies and humanitarian entities in delivering vital medical aid and relief supplies to the countries hardest hit.

This recent Ebola response underscores Dubai’s enduring commitment to advancing global humanitarian efforts and supporting nations in urgent health crises. As Congo endeavors to manage the outbreak, this timely delivery of medical supplies is set to enhance healthcare services and fortify the battle against the virus.
