Mamady Doumbouya Secures Victory in Guinea's Presidential Election

Mamady Doumbouya Secures Victory in Guinea's Presidential Election

Post by : Saif Rahman

According to provisional results released by election officials, Mamady Doumbouya, Guinea’s military ruler, has been announced as the victor in the nation’s presidential election. This significant outcome represents a key political transition for the West African country, which has been under military governance since Doumbouya led a coup in 2021.

The former special forces leader garnered 86.72% of the votes in the December 28 election, eliminating the need for a runoff. Should the Supreme Court confirm the results, Doumbouya is set to embark on a seven-year presidential term, with the judiciary having eight days to verify the results amid potential legal disputes.

Doumbouya initially came to power after ousting President Alpha Condé, who had been in office since 2010. Initially, he pledged a transition to civilian governance and promised that military members would abstain from future elections. However, this commitment was later overturned. A newly established constitution ratified in a September referendum lifted restrictions on junta leaders, allowing Doumbouya to participate in the election.

His victory was anticipated, particularly as prominent political figures such as the former president Condé and notable opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo are currently in exile, leaving Doumbouya to contend with eight lesser-known candidates, effectively splitting the opposition vote. Election authorities reported a voter turnout of approximately 81%, although opposition factions have challenged this figure, especially in light of low participation observed in certain areas of Conakry.

Doumbouya's rising popularity is closely linked to Guinea's abundant natural resources, including the world’s largest bauxite reserves and the significant Simandou iron ore project, which commenced operations last month after extensive delays. Doumbouya has claimed credit for advancing this project and implementing strategies to secure greater state benefits from its resources. His administration has adopted a strong stance against foreign mining operations, echoing a broader trend of resource nationalism evident across parts of West Africa.

Supporters assert that Doumbouya's age and firm governance resonate with the nation’s youthful demographic, with a median age of just 19. On the other hand, critics express deep concerns regarding political liberties. Civil society organizations and opposition voices allege that protests are being suppressed, media outlets face undue pressure, and political adversaries are often muted.

The United Nations has voiced concern as well. Its human rights chief indicated that the election campaign faced severe limitations, with reports of intimidation, enforced disappearances, and constraints on media freedom. Opposition representatives have alleged widespread electoral fraud, asserting that observers were prevented from monitoring the voting process.

As Guinea proceeds, Doumbouya’s election concludes a chapter of military rule while ushering in uncertainty. Citizens harbor hopes for stability and economic progress, contrasting with fears that true democracy and open political dialogue could remain elusive.
