Can Mixing Electrolytes with Alcohol Prevent Hangovers? Insights from a UCLA Doctor

Can Mixing Electrolytes with Alcohol Prevent Hangovers? Insights from a UCLA Doctor

Post by : Saif Rahman

Recently, many individuals have turned to mixing electrolyte powders with alcohol in hopes of warding off hangovers. Viral social media clips depict people adding electrolyte sachets into their cocktails, dubbing it a “hangover hack.” But does this strategy genuinely work? A doctor from UCLA offers a straightforward explanation.

Dr. Myro Figura, an anesthesiologist at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, discussed its effectiveness in a video he released on November 11.

Do electrolytes aid when added to alcohol?

According to Dr. Figura, electrolytes provide some benefit. He notes that a hangover often occurs due to dehydration and the loss of essential minerals. Electrolytes can help restore these minerals and maintain hydration.

Thus, mixing electrolytes into alcoholic beverages may alleviate some hangover symptoms.

Nevertheless, Dr. Figura cautions against overestimating these benefits. Social media often portrays electrolytes as a complete solution to prevent hangovers. However, he clarifies that this is misleading. Alcohol impacts the body in various ways, and electrolytes cannot counteract all of those effects.

What does this imply for you?

While electrolytes can slightly improve how you feel the next day, they aren't a miracle remedy. Consuming too much alcohol can still lead to a hangover, even with electrolyte supplementation.

Medical professionals assert that the best method to avoid hangovers is straightforward: drink in moderation, stay hydrated with water between drinks, eat beforehand, and recognize your limits.

In conclusion, electrolytes may offer minor relief, but they won't completely eliminate a hangover—regardless of what social media might suggest.
