Residents across New Delhi and nearby NCR regions woke up to light rainfall and cloudy skies on Friday morning, receiving much-needed relief from the intense heatwave conditions that had gripped the region for several days. The sudden weather change brought cooler winds and a noticeable drop in temperatures after days of scorching heat.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the rainfall and thunderstorm activity developed due to weather disturbances across northwest India. The showers helped reduce the temperature slightly, bringing temporary comfort to people struggling with extreme summer conditions in the capital.
Before the rainfall, Delhi recorded extremely high temperatures crossing 43 degrees Celsius. Safdarjung, the city’s primary weather station, registered a maximum temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius, which remained above the seasonal average despite the slight dip caused by changing wind patterns.
Weather experts stated that winds blowing from Rajasthan and the Thar Desert had earlier intensified the heatwave by making the atmosphere extremely dry. However, the recent shift in wind direction contributed to a brief cooling effect and increased moisture levels in the region.
The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to continue in Delhi till May 28. Officials said temperatures may once again rise close to 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days as hot desert winds are expected to return across northern India.
Meteorologists also indicated the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and light rain activity during evening and early morning hours over the next few days. However, these weather events are not expected to significantly impact daytime temperatures for a longer period.
Experts believe pre-monsoon activity expected in early June could provide more stable relief from the ongoing heatwave. Until then, residents have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours and follow official weather advisories.
