Thousands of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo have started returning home from Burundi following signs of improved security in eastern regions. The movement comes after the withdrawal of rebel forces from key conflict areas.
A recent group of around 470 people crossed back into Congo after spending months in refugee camps. These individuals had fled violence in and around Uvira and were staying in camps in Burundi’s Buhumuza province.
According to the United Nations, more than 33,000 Congolese refugees have returned home since March. The returns have been largely voluntary, with families deciding to go back after hearing about improved conditions in their home areas.
The withdrawal of the M23 rebels from Uvira under international pressure played a key role in restoring a sense of safety. This development has encouraged displaced communities to rebuild their lives.
Officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees have been overseeing the repatriation process. They confirmed that return operations will continue in phases, with regular transport arrangements for refugees willing to go back.
Despite the progress, authorities have emphasized that returns will only be organized for areas considered safe. Some regions in eastern Congo remain unstable due to the presence of multiple armed groups and ongoing conflict.
Burundi is currently hosting over 200,000 Congolese refugees, many of whom fled recent violence. The reopening of border crossings has made it easier for refugees to return home, offering hope for long-term stability.
The situation in eastern Congo remains complex, but the return of refugees marks a positive step toward recovery. It reflects growing confidence in security improvements and the desire of displaced families to return to their communities.
