In Tehran, the body of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is currently lying in state, allowing politicians and international delegations to pay their final respects. This marks the commencement of a week-long mourning period across Iran.
On Friday, mourners in black attire escorted his coffin through the expansive Grand Mosalla complex. Draped with the flag of the Islamic Republic, the casket has been displayed to vast crowds. Khamenei led Iran for over three decades.
Next to his coffin lie the remains of his three-year-old granddaughter, oldest daughter, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, tragically lost in a February 28 strike during a protracted conflict involving the U.S. and Israel, according to government-affiliated sources.
Originally set for March, the funeral had to be postponed due to ongoing hostilities.
Visuals on state television displayed President Masoud Pezeshkian at the coffin, along with parliament leader Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Ahmad Vahidi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), made his first public appearance since the war erupted.
Reports indicate over 50 foreign delegations are attending the ceremonies. The Iranian administration has refrained from inviting several European nations, limiting invitations to neutral or ally countries.
As highlighted by Al Jazeera, leaders including the presidents of Iraq, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Georgia, as well as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are in attendance.
The presence of Ziyad al-Nakhalah, leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, was also noted at the funeral.
Millions are expected to join mourning processions in the upcoming days. Gatherings are scheduled across Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad.
Officials anticipate a turnout reminiscent of the 1989 funeral for former Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini, which witnessed millions in attendance.
The upcoming ceremonies will feature a public event in Tehran on Saturday, followed by processions through key religious sites in both Iran and Iraq. The final burial will occur in Mashhad next week, the birthplace of Khamenei and the resting place of the eighth Shia Imam.
State media has been showcasing images of banners and displays featuring Khamenei alongside military motifs in Tehran’s Enghelab Square. Officials have positioned the ceremonies as a demonstration of national unity during this politically sensitive period following the conflict.
Analysts quoted in Iranian media argue that the funeral serves as a symbol of resilience and stability, with officials claiming the nation has grown stronger in the face of external pressures.
